href=\"http:\/\/while%20terry%20pratchett%20and%20j.r.r%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20styles%20of%20fantasy%20writing%20are%20not%20all%20that%20similar%20on%20the%20surface,%20prime%20video%E2%80%99s%20iconic%20fantasy%20franchise%20marries%20the%20appeal%20of%20both%20authors%20in%20two%20great%20shows.%20j.r.r%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20lord%20of%20the%20rings%20trilogy%20is%20arguably%20the%20single%20most%20influential%20piece%20of%20fantasy%20literature%20from%20the%20last%20century,%20as%20the%20author%E2%80%99s%20writing%20style%20shaped%20much%20of%20what%20viewers%20came%20to%20expect%20from%20the%20genre.%20however,%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20writing%20created%20a%20tricky%20challenge%20for%20screen%20adaptations%20like%20prime%20video%E2%80%99s%20prequel%20series%20the%20rings%20of%20power%20dqwdq.%20much%20of%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20work,%20particularly%20the%20silmarillion,%20is%20written%20in%20a%20dry,%20almost%20academic%20style%20that%20mirrors%20real-life%20historical%20documents,%20and%20it%20can%20be%20hard%20to%20turn%20this%20into%20an%20emotionally%20intimate%20story.%20the%20sheer%20scale%20of%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20middle-earth%20histories%20and%20their%20sweeping%20scope%20preclude%20a%20certain%20level%20of%20individual%20characterisation,%20whereas%20tv%20drama%20requires%20main%20characters%20for%20the%20audience%20to%20get%20invested%20in.%20in%20contrast,%20the%20iconic%20british%20fantasy%20writer%20terry%20pratchett%20had%20the%20opposite%20problem.%20the%20author%20of%20the%20iconic%2041-novel%20discworld%20series%20masterfully%20parodied%20the%20same%20familiar%20fantasy%20tropes%20that%20tolkien%20helped%20define,%20and%20his%20satirical%20work%20is%20among%20the%20most%20celebrated%20literary%20contributions%20to%20the%20genre.%20however,%20it%20has%20proven%20exceedingly%20difficult%20for%20discworld%20to%20spawn%20a%20screen%20adaptation%20that%20lived%20up%20to%20the%20books,%20thanks%20to%20the%20subtlety%20of%20pratchett%E2%80%99s%20deadpan%20humour.%20fortunately,%20despite%20being%20based%20on%20neither%20author%E2%80%99s%20writings,%20prime%20video%E2%80%99s%20second%20critical%20role%20show,%20the%20mighty%20nein,%20managed%20to%20blend%20their%20appeal.%20the%20mighty%20nein%20has%20the%20scale%20of%20middle-earth%20&amp;%20the%20comedy%20of%20discworld%20after%20prime%20video%E2%80%99s%20first%20animated%20adaptation%20of%20the%20popular%20actual%20play%20podcast%20critical%20role,%20the%20dwq%20legend%20of%20vox%20machina,%20proved%20a%20massive%20critical%20success,%20the%20series%20spawned%20a%20spinoff%20in%20the%20form%20of%20the%20mighty%20nein%20in%202025.%20both%20shows%20are%20based%20on%20real-life%20dungeons%20&amp;%20dragons%20campaigns,%20and%20it%20shows,%20with%20their%20mismatched%20bands%20of%20antiheroes%20recapturing%20the%20loose,%20thrown-together%20chemistry%20of%20a%20great%20game.%20however,%20it%20is%20the%20mighty%20nein%E2%80%99s%20darker%20spin%20on%20this%20premise%20that%20feels%20like%20an%20effective%20mix%20of%20tolkien%20and%20pratchett.%20like%20the%20lord%20of%20the%20rings%20and%20the%20rings%20of%20power%20qwdd,%20the%20mighty%20nein%20has%20scale%20to%20spare.%20the%20show%E2%80%99s%20world%20feels%20rich,%20lived-in,%20and%20utterly%20immersive,%20as%20laden%20with%20deep%20in-universe%20lore%20as%20game%20of%20thrones%20or%20the%20witcher.%20however,%20the%20show%E2%80%99s%20amoral%20characters%20and%20unpredictable%20tone%20also%20mean%20that,%20crucially,%20the%20critical%20role%20series%20carries%20all%20this%20storytelling%20scope%20a%20lot%20lighter%20than%20many%20of%20its%20contemporaries.%20compared%20to%20many%20fantasy%20shows,%20the%20mighty%20nein%20is%20unexpectedly%20funny%20and%20irreverent,%20even%20as%20the%20gritty%20series%20reveals%20the%20dark%20backstories%20and%20traumas%20of%20its%20main%20characters.%20like%20the%20discworld%20books,%20the%20mighty%20nein%20takes%20place%20in%20a%20fantasy%20world%20wherein%20everyone%20is%20flawed,%20nothing%20is%20perfect,%20and%20the%20show%E2%80%99s%20invented%20reality%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20reflect%20an%20idealised%20historical%20past,%20but%20instead%20mirrors%20the%20same%20social%20problems%20of%20contemporary%20reality.%20critical%20role%20is%20ruling%20fantasy%20tv%20right%20now%20while%20its%20predecessor%20the%20legend%20of%20vox%20machina%20is%20a%20more%20traditional%20heroic%20fantasy,%20complete%20with%20a%20band%20of%20heroes%20who%20support%20each%20other%20and%20comparatively%20black-and-white%20morality,%20the%20mighty%20nein%20is%20more%20cynical%20and%20subversive,%20and%20a%20lot%20funnier%20as%20a%20result.%20the%20show%20is%20undoubtedly%20darker%20than%20its%20predecessor,%20but,%20paradoxically,%20the%20mighty%20nein%20never%20feels%20like%20it%20takes%20itself%20as%20seriously%20as%20netflix%E2%80%99s%20league%20of%20legends%20show%20arcane%20qwddq%20or%20hbo%E2%80%99s%20his%20dark%20materials.%20the%20mighty%20nein%E2%80%99s%20ability%20to%20bounce%20seamlessly%20between%20character%20comedy%20and%20dark%20moments%20of%20brutality%20is%20a%20big%20part%20of%20the%20reason%20that%20the%20critical%20role%20franchise%20has%20a%20stranglehold%20on%20fantasy%20tv%20right%20now.%20many%20franchises,%20such%20as%20netflix%E2%80%99s%20the%20witcher,%20lean%20too%20hard%20into%20taking%20themselves%20too%20seriously,%20whereas%20critical%20role%E2%80%99s%20the%20mighty%20nein%20proves%20tolkien%E2%80%99s%20depth%20and%20pratchett%E2%80%99s%20sardonic%20sense%20of%20humour%20can%20co-exist%20onscreen.\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>The Lord of the Rings<\/strong><\/em><\/a> author J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s styles of fantasy writing are not all that similar on the surface, Prime Video\u2019s iconic fantasy franchise marries the appeal of both authors in one great show. J.R.R Tolkien\u2019s <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy is arguably the single most influential piece of fantasy literature from the last century, as the author\u2019s writing style shaped much of what viewers came to expect from the genre.
